Project Elements

Accessibility

Improving accessibility to the recreational opportunities along the waterfront for everyone, regardless of differences in ability, is a priority of the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) project. Universal access will be increased throughout the project area in these key ways:

  • New community-oriented and accessible crossings over the FDR Drive to the East River waterfront will be constructed, including:
    • Two new pedestrian bridges at Delancey Street and East 10th Street with wider ramps and gentler grades that are consistent with the principles of universal access, in contrast to the existing narrow switchback ramps;
    • A new Corlears Hook Bridge with a regraded and universally accessible approach from Corlears Hook Park; and
    • A reconfigured park-side entry at Houston Street with at-grade access to the waterfront.
  • Universally accessible pathways throughout the reconstructed East River Park;
  • New park furniture that incorporates accessible seating areas, including at the embayment step-downs.
  • A new amphitheater designed to ensure that the pathway circulation, seating, and performance spaces meet requirements for universal accessibility.
Accessible seating opportunities at the embayments
New furniture at the embayments allows for flexibility and openings for companion seating.
