The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) requires various types of licenses and permits. The FDNY also certifies (reviews and approves) plans. These certifications protect public safety in New York City and directly affect a number of businesses, industry professionals, storage, housing types and other public and private properties. FDNY's Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for overseeing these safety regulations.

Emergency Planning and Preparedness

Emergency Planning and Preparedness plans establish procedures for building occupants during fire or non-fire emergencies.

NOTICE: Effective 10/15/2019, FDNY will no longer accept paper-based applications. Emergency Planning and Preparedness plans must be filed online.


Technology Management

Technology Management Unit reviews plans for building safety systems and modifications (variances) to the New York City Fire Code or Rules in order to increase fire operations functionality, decrease fire hazards and improve life safety.

Other Approvals and Reviews

FDNY offers comprehensive plan reviews for a number of construction types, including fire alarm systems, fire suppression (water and non-water), emergency action plans and fire safety plans.


Know Your Zone Compliance

To comply with Local Law 103/2019, owners of any Group R-2 building or occupancy within a hurricane evacuation zone are required to post a hurricane evacuation notice within the building or occupancy. This notice will inform occupants of the hurricane evacuation zone for that building and how to find the closest hurricane evacuation centers.
