Transportation of Hazardous Materials Permit

Permit Description

A permit is required to transport the following hazardous materials in or on a motor vehicle:

(A) A flammable liquid in a quantity exceeding 1,000 pounds aggregate gross weight, except vehicles transporting paint products prominently labeled as such in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations or;

(B) A combustible liquid in a quantity exceeding 1,000 pounds aggregate gross weight, except vehicles transporting paint products prominently labeled as such in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations or;

(C) A compressed gas in any quantity exceeding the limits set forth in Fire Code Table 105.6(1) or 105.6(2) (PDF) or;

(D) Any quantity of explosives, except small arms ammunition.

Motor vehicle inspections are conducted at the Following location:

Bureau of Fire Prevention’s Hazardous Cargo Vehicle Inspection Unit
245 Meserole Avenue (entrance on 825 Humboldt Street)
Brooklyn, New York

Hours: Monday - Sunday, 7 days a week, from 7:00am to 3:00pm except for scheduled holidays and closings

Delivery of Liquified Petroleum Gas (Propane) for Use at Outdoor Dining Areas for Comfort Heating:

In 2020, Mayor issued Emergency Executive Order 153 authorizing the temporary use of propane-fueled heaters in eligible outdoor dining areas. The use of propane-fueled heaters is allowed only after an “express authorization” or an operational permit issued by the Fire Department.
