FDNY Hosts Bureau of Fire Prevention Employee Recognition Ceremony

October 11, 2019

On Friday, October 11, 2019, the Department held a ceremony to honor members of the Bureau of Fire Prevention for their commitment to service to the City and the Department.

“No one in this Department prevents more fires than our dedicated Fire Protection Inspectors, said Assistant Chief of Operations John Hodgens. “You make our city, and the people who live, work, and visit here safer every single day.”

“This ceremony is about celebrating your outstanding and life-saving work that helps the Department accomplish its mission,” said Chief of Fire Operations Thomas Richardson. “We see the difference that you make every day. Fire deaths remain historically low and our Bureau of Fire Prevention has had a major impact on that. Your efforts truly save lives.”

At the ceremony, 15 members were honored for their work in various units and district offices across the five boroughs.

“I have a background in fire science and emergency services, so this Department seemed like the perfect fit for me. I knew I wanted to do my part and make sure everyone was as safe as they could be,” says Cassandra Missall, Community Coordinator. “My job predominately deals with making sure that our child care institutions are up to code, up to date, and safe. As a new mother, this job has a special place in my heart and it is exceptionally rewarding.”

Fire Protection Inspectors ensure life and fire safety of 8.6 million New Yorkers, visitors, and FDNY members by inspecting buildings and ensuring compliance of New York City regulations.

“I am truly honored to be here today and every day. I love everything about this job,” said FDNY Fire Protection Inspector Kevin Bumford. “I work with the Illegal Conversion Task Force. I get to help people every day and that is what makes this job so rewarding.”

Fire Protection Inspectors inspect more than 300,000 buildings every year.

“It’s auspicious that during this week, when the nation focuses on fire prevention that we honor your success in that endeavor,” said Deputy Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention, John Buckheit
