Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up to participate in the study?

Participation is by invitation only. This is because properties selected to participate in this study were drawn from a random sample to ensure the results are representative of the city as a whole. Selected property owners will receive an invitation letter by mail. To participate, you need to 1) take the survey and 2) be available for a site visit by a land surveyor to take elevation measurements.
If you have received an invitation letter, take the online survey or call 1-844-228-2761 to take the survey by phone. You will need to provide the Personal Identification Number (PIN) listed on the both the front and back of the invitation letter to register. You will also need to answer questions necessary to study the economic impact of higher flood insurance costs on you and homeowners like you. This survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Your name and the property address will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used by the City for compliance or tax assessment purposes.

After I sign up to participate, what happens next?

Once you have completed the survey, someone from the study team will contact you to schedule a 1-hour site visit to your property by a licensed surveyor. Several options for the time and date of their visit will be provided as you must be at the property to meet with the surveyor during the visit. You will receive a reminder of your scheduled visit 24 hours beforehand by telephone. The study team will provide you with their official credentials when they arrive at your property.

During the site visit, a survey crew will measure elevations of different areas of your property. The majority of their measurements are taken outside the property but they will need to spend 5-10 minutes inside the property to measure the lowest floor and will need access to your basement if you have one. When will the site visits for the study be performed?

The site visits will be performed late summer through early fall. You will be able to choose from several options for the time and date of the visit based on your own schedule. Early morning and Saturday visits will also be available.

What do I receive if I participate in the study?

When the site visit is completed you will receive a $50 gift card.
A few weeks after the site visit you will also receive a FEMA Elevation Certificate for your home prepared by a licensed surveyor. The Elevation Certificate will help your insurance agent determine the best flood insurance rate for you. On average, an Elevation Certificate can cost between $800 and $1,000 to have prepared – yours will be free of charge. The Elevation Certificate will only be provided to you and will not be provided to the City or to FEMA.
**Note that only participants who complete both the initial survey AND the site visit by the surveyor will receive the $50 gift card and Elevation Certificate. Completion of the site visit is essential to the study.**
