As I begin my tenure as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, I am struck by the talent and commitment that the Law Department brings as it tackles the wide variety of novel and complex legal issues that run throughout almost every feature of New York City life.
The attorney and professional staff of the Law Department have the privilege and responsibility of representing the City, its numerous agencies and employees both in defensive litigation and in lawsuits we bring affirmatively as guardians of the common good. The Department represents the City in juvenile prosecutions in family court and advises City leaders in legislative and transactional matters. Our work involves a wide variety of issues including: housing, education, juvenile justice, civil rights, transportation and environmental protection. The legal questions we address are wide-ranging from negligence cases to novel constitutional challenges. We recognize that in the majority of our matters, our opposing parties are also our citizens who have a right to have their claims fairly heard and decided.
If you feel drawn to a career in public service, consider the Law Department. We offer our attorneys and professional staff unparalleled hands-on experience all of which is anchored in our core values: Justice, Excellence, Dedication, Teamwork, Diversity, Respect, Mutual Support, Professional development and, a bedrock value, Integrity.
