Commercial and Real Estate Litigation Division

ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNSEL 

Salary Range: $78,034 - $155,751

The Commercial & Real Estate Litigation Division of the New York City Law Department seeks an experienced litigator with strong research and writing skills to represent the City and related entities in commercial litigation matters. The position is for an attorney to handle the Division's complex commercial cases, including procurement and breach of contract disputes arising out of contracts for critically needed goods and services, challenges to important government initiatives, and claims under multimillion-dollar construction contracts with private companies to build or repair the City's infrastructure. The position will also involve counseling City agencies regarding procurement issues, the contractual ADR process, and other matters. The Division litigates in both state and federal courts and before administrative tribunals, such as the Contract Dispute Resolution Board.

Applicants must be graduates of ABA accredited law schools and have at least three years of legal experience. Applicants must be admitted and in good standing in New York State. Candidates must possess strong legal writing and analytical skills, as well as excellent judgment and interpersonal skills.

Tort Division

ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNSEL

Salary Range: $82,891 - $162,267

The NYC Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for the Tort Division to handle sensitive personal injury matters from inception to resolution.

Responsibilities include: conducting statutory hearings and depositions; drafting pleadings, affirmative and responsive motions, and discovery responses; requesting document discovery; conducting preliminary conferences, compliance conferences, settlement and TAP conferences, and argument on motions; participating in the Tort Division's trial rotation program and second-chair opportunities, which includes the investigation and preparation of all aspects of trials, completing factual and legal research, securing relevant evidence, developing trial strategies, interviewing and preparing witnesses, drafting motions, jury charges, trial and post-trial motions and memoranda, and negotiating settlements.

Applicants must be admitted and in good standing in New York State. Applicants should have substantial legal experience; demonstrated exceptional organizational and supervisory abilities; strong legal analytical skills; solid knowledge of municipal tort law, the CPLR, and evidentiary issues; solid knowledge of and experience in personal-injury-case evaluation and valuation of injuries; strong interpersonal skills; and excellent judgment. Trial experience is a plus, but not a prerequisite.

Workers' Compensation Division

ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNSEL

Salary Range: $75,677.00 - $106,655.00

The New York City Law Department is accepting applications for an attorney position in our Workers’ Compensation Division. The division represents the City of New York and related entities at administrative hearings before the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board. Division attorneys manage and litigate matters involving City employees whose claims for benefits are pending before the Workers’ Compensation Board. They appear at hearings and trials before administrative law judges on a daily basis. They conduct investigations and legal research in preparation for hearings and evaluate the merits of claims. They regularly cross-examine fact witnesses as well as all types of medical experts. Cases involve a wide variety of medical conditions, from de minimus to life threatening. Legal issues cover a broad spectrum, including compensability and coverage under the Workers’ Compensation Law, timely claim filing, questions of causation, medical disability, need for treatment and entitlement to wage replacement. Attorneys research and write appeals to the Commissioners of the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Appellate Division. 

Applicants must be a graduate of an ABA accredited law school. Applicants must either be (1) admitted to practice law in the State of New York or (2) have passed all three exams required for New York Bar admission (the UBE, NYLE and MPRE) and be in the process of becoming admitted. The successful candidate will possess excellent oral and written advocacy skills, the ability to manage a large case load, and the ability to think and respond quickly.
