Local Laws and Executive Order

Local Laws 245 and 247 of 2017

The Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) role was established by Local Law 245 of 2017 which, together with Local Law 247 of 2017, gives the CPO the authority and duty to create new privacy policies and protocols within a new citywide privacy protection framework. The CPO will require, among other mandates, that identifiable information be anonymized when necessary, and will instruct the privacy officer of each agency to issue guidance on the Law’s requirements of its employees and certain contractors and subcontractors.

Executive Order 34 (2018) places the CPO role within the Mayor’s Office of Information Privacy and establishes a Citywide Privacy Protection Committee within the Office of the Mayor. The CPO reports to the Director of the Mayor's Office of Operations.
