In February 2021, the Chief Privacy Officer (“CPO”) released revised privacy protection policies and protocols for New York City (“CPO Policies”). The CPO, who heads Mayor’s Office of Information Privacy (“MOIP”), first issued the CPO Policies in January 2019, in accordance with the requirements of section 8(h)(1) of the New York City Charter and section 23-1203 of the N.Y.C. Administrative Code. The CPO Policies underscore the City’s commitment to protect the privacy of all New Yorkers by setting forth privacy principles, requirements, and guidance to support City agencies and their privacy officers, and to help inform their decisions implicating privacy.
Both the inaugural and revised versions of the CPO Policies were informed by recommendations of the Citywide Privacy Protection Committee, following the culmination of, respectively, the 2018 and 2020 biennial agency compliance cycles mandated by the City’s privacy law. You can read them here:
