"Made in NY" Awards 2012

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine L. Oliver will host the seventh annual "Made in NY" Awards on June 4th at Gracie Mansion. The awards are given each year to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to various fields in the City's entertainment and digital media industries. The 2012 "Made in NY" honorees include: Academy Award-winning actor, director, producer Robert De Niro; Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep; Academy Award, Emmy, Tony and Grammy winnerWhoopi Goldberg; actress and television host Kelly Ripa; award-winning transmedia company @radical.media, which develops, produces and distributes innovative content across all forms of media; and the locally based Kickstarter a funding platform for creative projects. This year's "Made in NY" Mayor's Award for Lifetime Achievement will be presented to actors and legendary husband-and-wife comedy team Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.

"New York City has experienced an extraordinary year in the entertainment and media industries," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Television production has reached record levels and employs thousands of New Yorkers, and our digital sector continues to expand as more and more companies are founded here and move here. The ‘Made in NY' Awards are the perfect way to celebrate the achievements of the past year."

"Each year we gather to pay tribute to some of the biggest and brightest names in entertainment and media, and this year is no exception," said Commissioner Oliver. "We look forward to awarding this year's honorees and thank them for their contributions to the City."

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment consists of the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, NYC Digital and NYC Media, the official TV, radio and online network of the City of New York. The agency's mission is to streamline government communications by making information accessible, leveraging technology to aid in the transparency of government and by supporting relevant media and entertainment industries in New York.

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro launched his prolific motion picture career in Brian De Palma's The Wedding Party in 1969. By 1974 he had won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor in recognition of his critically acclaimed performance in Bang the Drum Slowly and from the National Society of Film Critic for Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets.

In 1974 De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Godfather, Part II and in 1980 he won his second Oscar, as Best Actor, for his portrayal of Jake La Motta in Scorsese's Raging Bull.

He has earned Academy Award nominations for his work in four additional films: Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Awakenings, and the remake of the 1962 classic Cape Fear.

De Niro appeared in and made his directorial debut with A Bronx Tale in 1993. He later directed and appeared in The Good Shepherd.

Whoopi Goldberg

In 2002, Whoopi Goldberg became one of a very elite group of artists who have won the Grammy (Whoopi Goldberg, 1985), the Academy Award (Ghost, 1991), the Golden Globe (The Color Purple, 1985 and Ghost, 1991), the Emmy (as host of AMC's "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel," 2002 and a Daytime Emmy for "The View" in 2009) and a Tony (Producer of Thoroughly Modern Millie, 2002). She is equally well-known for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of children, the homeless, human rights, education, substance abuse and the battle against AIDS, as well as many other causes and charities. Among her many charitable activities, Whoopi is a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations.

Born and raised in New York City, Whoopi worked in theatre and improvisation in San Diego and the Bay Area, where she performed with the Blake Street Hawkeyes theatre troupe. It was there that she created the characters which became The Spook Show and evolved into her hit Broadway show, Grammy Award-winning album and the HBO special that helped launch her career.

Whoopi made her motion picture debut in Steven Spielberg's film version of Alice Walker's The Color Purple, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award. Her performance in Ghost earned her the Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. Whoopi has also appeared in such films as Jumpin' Jack Flash, Clara's Heart, The Long Walk Home, Soapdish, The Player, Sarafina!, Sister Act, Made in America, Corrina, Corrina, Boys on the Side, Eddie, The Associate and Ghosts of Mississippi, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Girl, Interrupted, Kingdom Come and Rat Race. She has voiced characters in such animated features as The Lion King, Racing Stripes, Doogal, and Everyone's Hero. In November 2010, she was part of Tyler Perry's all-star film adaption of For Colored Girlsfollowed by A Little Bit of Heaven," with Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal and Kathy Bates.

On television, Whoopi appeared for five seasons on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", co-starred with Jean Stapleton in "Bagdad Café" and hosted her own syndicated late-night talk show. She appeared in the Emmy-nominated HBO drama, In the Gloaming, directed by Christopher Reeve, as well as The Wonderful World of Disney's Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella and A Knight in Camelot and appeared in the mini-series "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns." She starred in the NBC sitcom, "Whoopi," which she executive produced, as well as the television movies, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and Showtime's Good Fences," which she co-produced with co-star Danny Glover. She produced and appeared on Nick Jr's "Whoopi's Littleburg" and currently appears on ABC's Emmy Award-winning "The View," for which she has won a Daytime Emmy Award.

Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa is a co-host of the popular syndicated morning talk show "LIVE! with Kelly & Michael."

After ten consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Talk Show Host with former partner Regis Philbin, the duo recently was honored as co-winners of the 2011 Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host for "LIVE." Also during her tenure, the show has been nominated for nine Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show, has received two TV Guide Award nominations for Favorite Daytime Talk Show and multiple People's Choice nominations for Favorite Talk Show Host.

Ripa ventured into primetime in 2003 on "Hope & Faith," starring with Faith Ford in the half-hour sitcom, which ran for three seasons on ABC. In 2002, Ripa concluded a 12-year stint as Hayley Vaughan on ABC's "All My Children." She won three Soap Opera Digest Awards for her work, two for Outstanding Younger Lead Actress and one for Hottest Romance, which she shared with her real-life husband and co-star, actor Mark Consuelos. Ripa also received three Daytime Emmy nominations, two for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and one for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series.

She had a recurring role on the hit NBC series "Ed," appeared in the telefilm It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, and won acclaim for her turn in late night TV's most coveted role: hosting "Saturday Night Live." Her voice could be heard as a guest star on the popular animated series "Kim Possible" and "Duck Dodgers." In 2007, Ripa hosted the TV Land Awards and the "50 Funniest Women Alive" special on the Oxygen network. Ripa also hosted the annual ABC special "Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade" for nine years, eight of them with Philbin. They received a 2006 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special, and again were nominated in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Best known for her television work, Ripa also has several feature films to her credit. She appeared in the acclaimed Miramax feature Marvin's Room in 1996, and in 1999 won the Best Actress award at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival for her work in The Stand-In. She was also part of the voice cast of the computer-generated animated feature Fly Me to the Moon. Ripa and Consuelos also oversee their SoHo-based production company, Milojo Productions. Their first effort, the feature documentary The Streak for ESPN, told the compelling story of a Florida high school wrestling team with an extraordinary 34-year winning streak. It premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and was nominated for a Sports Emmy in the category of Outstanding Sports Documentary. In addition, Milojo had a first-look development deal with TLC and Discovery, and premiered its first docu-series "Masters of Reception" in 2009. Following that, the company launched a country-wide search for female inventors and premiered "Homemade Millionaire" on TLC in Fall, 2010, hosted by Ripa. This past year they also premiered the film "Off the Rez" at the Tribeca Film Festival, and then aired it on TLC. In addition, the company recently premiered "Jersey Cheer" for Lifetime, and produced "Dirty Soap" for E! with Machete Productions. They also sold their first scripted project to ABC this past year, entitled "Port Love," and are currently developing more in the scripted arena. They have several other non-scripted projects in development, and are currently producing the new series "Cheer" for CMT which documents hard-driving coach Patty Ann Romero and her elite competitive cheerleading team as they journey toward the world championship.

Meryl Streep

For almost 40 years, Meryl Streep has portrayed an astonishing array of characters in a career that has cut its own unique path from the theater through film and television.

Ms. Streep was educated in the New Jersey public school system through high school, graduated cum laude from Vassar College, and received her MFA with honors from Yale University in 1975. She began her professional life on the New York stage, where she quickly established her signature versatility and verve as an actor. Within three years of graduation, she made her Broadway debut, won an Emmy (for "Holocaust") and received her first Oscar nomination (for The Deerhunter). In 2011, in a record that is unsurpassed, she won her seventeenth Academy Award nomination for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. For this role, she has won the Academy Award, British Academy Award, and the Golden Globe for Best Actress. She can also be seen in Hope Springs, alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell.

Ms. Streep has pursued her interest in the environment through her work with Mothers and Others, a consumer advocacy group that she co-founded in 1989. M&O worked for ten years to promote sustainable agriculture, establish new pesticide regulations, and the availability of organic and sustainably grown local foods.

Ms. Streep serves as spokesperson for the proposed National Women's History Museum.

She also lends her efforts to Women for Women International, Women in the World Foundation and Partners in Health. She is a member of the Vassar College Board of Trustees and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has been accorded a Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Film Institute, a 2008 honor by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, The 2010 National Medal of Arts by President Obama and in 2011 she received a Kennedy Center Honor.

Her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, and she are the parents of a son and three daughters.

Anne Meara/Jerry Stiller

Anne is known as half of the comedy team, "Stiller & Meara" but also boasts an impressive solo career. After studying acting with Alfred Linder and Uta Hagen, Anne appeared with Zero Mostel in Ulysses In Nighttown and in the first season of the New York Shakespeare Festival in Central Park for Joe Papp. Off-Broadway Anne created the role of Bunny in John Guare's House of Blue Leaves and starred in Harvey Fierstein's Spookhouse. She played the 83-year-old mother in Guare's Bosom And Neglect and appeared as the nurse in The Public Theatre's production of Romeo & Juliet.

On Broadway, Anne appeared in Richard Greenberg's Eastern Standard and in the Roundabout's production of Anna Christie for which she received a Tony Award nomination.

As "Stiller & Meara", Anne and her husband Jerry, gained nationwide fame as a comedy team on the "Ed Sullivan Show". They have performed together nationally in nightclubs and regional theatres and have made countless appearances on television. Stiller and Meara have received many awards for their radio and television commercials which include Amalgamated Bank, Blue Nun Wine and United Van Lines.

Anne has been featured in the films The Out of Towners, Fame, The Boys From Brazil, Lovers And Other Strangers and Awakenings. She was seen in the feature film, Like Mike for Twentieth Century Fox and Night at the Museum with her son Ben. Her work in independent films include, The Search for One Eyed Jimmy, MIA, An Open Window, Judy Berlin, The Daytrippers, Southie, and Get Well Soon. Other independent films include Fish in the Bathtub, The Independent and Chump Change, all featuring her husband Jerry. Most recently Anne has been featured in When the Evening Comes (co-starring Philip Bosco), and Another Harvest Moon (co-starring Doris Roberts and Ernest Borgnine.) When the Evening Comes was recently screened at the Teaneck Film Festival to a full house. Another Harvest Moon premiered at the Rhode Island Film Festival in August 2009 and in February 2010 was screened at the Sedona International Film Festival. On television Anne appeared for several years as Peggy Moody on ABC's "All My Children". Other television appearances include the title role in the CBS series "Kate McShane" and recurring roles on "Rhoda", "Archie Bunker's Place", "Alf", "Sex in the City" and "King of Queens". Guest appearances include "Murder She Wrote", "Heat of the Night", "Homicide", ‘Ed', "Will And Grace" and "Law and Order: SVU". Anne also guest starred with Jerry on an episode of NBC's "Mercy". Anne and Jerry were featured in the American Playhouse presentation of The Sunset Gang and Anne starred in "Avenue Z Afternoon" on the A&E network. She was also featured in the Lifetime network films Jitters and What Makes a Family (with Brooke Shields and Cherry Jones). Anne has received five Emmy nominations for her television work including a 1997 nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a drama series for "Homicide".

Anne was co-writer (with Lila Garrett) and star of The Other Woman, a CBS Movie of the Week, which won a Writer's Guild Award. Anne's script After-Play was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club and enjoyed a sold-out run. After-Play then moved Off-Broadway to Theatre Four with Anne starring as "Terry" (and later as "Renee") and Jerry as ‘Phil'. She and Jerry also appeared in the show when it played at the Cape and Westport Playhouses. Anne received the Outer Critic's Circle John Gassner Award for Playwriting for After-Play. Her last play, Down the Garden Paths, starred John Shea, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson and was produced at The George Street Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre and Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre.

Most recently, Anne and Jerry have hosted their own web series, "Stiller and Meara" on Yahoo! and Hulu. The series highlights Anne and Jerry's views on a variety of hot topics. Anne continues to work in all facets of the industry, including a recent television pilot, "Rip City" (with Christine Taylor) for the TV Land network. In 2011 Anne completed a month-long Off-Broadway run in Nora and Delia Ephron's Love, Loss, and What I Wore. Just recently, Anne has done staged reading for the Bleecker Company (Chip off the Moon by Bill Quigley) and New Group (The Watchwoman by Dan McCabe).

As Frank Costanza on Seinfeld, Jerry Stiller was nominated for a 1997 Emmy Award, won the 1998 American Comedy Award for ‘Funniest Male Guest Appearance in a Television Series' and in 2008 was honored by viewers and the Paley Center for Media as ‘TV's All Time Funniest Relative'. Following Seinfeld Jerry enjoyed a nine-year run as "Arthur Spooner" on the hit CBS series, "King of Queens".

Jerry and his wife, Anne Meara were part of The Compass Players (which later became Second City). Then as Stiller and Meara, they performed at David Gordon's Phase II in Greenwich Village. They went on to play record-breaking engagements at Max Gordon's Blue Angel and The Village Vanguard. They toured the country playing Mr. Kelly's, The Hungry i, The Crescendo, The Flamingo and The Sands, working with Count Basie, The original Supremes, Billy Eckstein and Diahann Carroll. Anne and Jerry performed at The Establishment in London, and appeared thirty-six times on "The Ed Sullivan Show".

Jerry made his legit debut in The Silver Whistle with Burgess Meredith then appeared with Lawrence Tibbett and Veronica Lake in the National Company of Peter Pan. T. Hambleton and Norris Houghton cast him as a resident in the first two seasons at the Phoenix Theatre, where he appeared in The Golden Apple and later Coriolanous for John Houseman. He worked again for Mr. Houseman at the Stratford Festival.

Broadway has seen Jerry in Hurlyburly, directed by Mike Nichols, The Ritz, Passione, The Golden Apple, Unexpected Guests, Three Men on a Horse (with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman), What's Wrong with This Picture and The Three Sisters.

He toured the boroughs in the first season of Joe Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival and created the role of Launce in John Guare's musical version of Two Gentlemen of Verona. He also appeared as Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing with Kevin Kline and Blythe Danner. At Lincoln Center, Jerry appeared in David Mamet's Prairie Du Chien for Greg Mosher. He played Bourbouroche for Walt Witcover's Masterwork Laboratory Theatre. Jerry played Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, the first musical produced at the Guthrie Theatre. He played opposite his daughter Amy in I Ought to be in Pictures and Beau Jest on the Straw Hat Circuit. Jerry starred with Anne in her award winning play, After-Play, at Theatre Four Off-Broadway and theatres on the summer circuit.

Shoeshine, which starred Jerry and his son Ben Stiller, was nominated for an Academy Award in the 1988 Short Subject Category. Other film appearances include The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three, Those Lips-Those Eyes, Airport '75, Nadine, The Ritz, The McGuffin, Hot Pursuit, Hairspray (original version) and The Pickle. He and Anne starred in the Joan Micklin Silver film, The Fish in the Bathtub. Other films include On the Line, Servicing Sara and Zoolander, (directed by and starring his son Ben Stiller). His starring role in The Independent opposite Jeaneane Garafolo garnered rave reviews nationwide. Jerry appeared as Mr. Pinky in the musical version of the film Hairspray (starring John Travolta) and was seen in the Farrelly Brother's film The Heartbreak Kid (once again co-starring with Ben) Jerry traveled to London to shoot Swinging with The Finkels (with Mandy Moore and Martin Freeman). He is also featured in the documentary When the World Breaks which was featured in several film festivals during 2010 and 2011.

On television, Jerry won praise as the charlatan psychoanalyst, Dr. Tamkin, opposite Robin Williams, in a PBS Great Performance of Saul Bellow's Seize The Day produced by Robert Geller. He also appeared in The Hollow Boy again for Mr. Geller. He and Anne starred together in The Detective (part of The Sunset Gang on American Playhouse). Jerry appeared in the HBO film Subway Stories and as the Devil's Advocate in Tales From the Darkside. He co-starred on the series "Joe and Sons" and "Tattinger's" and has guest starred on "Murder, She Wrote", "Law and Order", "LA Law", "In the Heat of the Night", "Homicide", "Touched by an Angel" and most recently as a judge on "The Good Wife". Jerry was heard as the voice of ‘Pretty Boy' on the Disney animated series, Teacher's Pet. He is featured in the animated films, Teacher's Pet, Lion King 3, Lion King 1 ½, and Food Fight. He was also featured in the CBS holiday special, "Robbie the Reindeer". Recently Jerry was heard as the voice of Stickler in the Disney Channel'sanimated series "Fish Hooks".

Jerry and Anne have written, performed and produced award winning radio commercials for Blue Nun Wine, United Van Lines and Amalgamated Bank among many others. Jerry appeared as Vince Lombardi in Nike ads, AT&T commercials with his "Seinfeld" wife, Estelle Harris, and for Total Cereal, Glad Bags and America Online 9.0. Currently he is featured in television, radio and print ads for Capital One Bank. He's also shot two videos for the band Rush, which were used during live performances of their recent tours. Recently he has been helping NYC promote their Million Trees NYC initiative and shot a commercial for Mitsubishi.

Jerry has performed for Isiah Sheffer's Selected Shorts series, heard on Public Radio reading John Sayle's At The Anarchist's Convention, S.J. Perelman's Eine Kleine Mothmusik and Russel Baker's Uncle Harold. He and Anne are also featured on the CD One People, Many Stories, for the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles. Jerry and Anne host an informational video on the business of acting, entitled "So You Want To Be An Actor?"

Jerry credits Professor Sawyer Falk at Syracuse University and Esther Porter Lane at the Henry Street Playhouse as his mentors. He has taught at the Herbert Berghof Studio and studied with Uta Hagen. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Drama from Syracuse University.

In April 2004, Jerry returned to his alma mater, Syracuse University, to perform his own one-man show, An Evening with Jerry Stiller to a rousing standing ovation. He has since performed his show at the Cape Playhouse, at Cornell University, in Morristown NJ, in Queens Theatre in the Park, at the Hilton Casino in Atlantic City, Richmond Hill, Toronto and for several other organizations in Florida and the Northeast.

In February 2007 Jerry and his wife Anne were honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, only one of four married couples to ever be honored with their own star. In May of 2004 Jerry and Anne received the Productive Aging Award, presented by the Jewish Council For the Aging in Washington, D.C. and in July of 2004 received the Thalia Award from Humber College in Toronto. Jerry and Anne have been honored by the City of New York with a Crystal Apple Award and are in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Walk of Fame. They were honored with the Fourth Annual Alan King Award in American Jewish Humor, given by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and honored by ART NY for their contribution to non-profit theatre. Jerry has received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and was the recipient of the first annual George Burns Memorial Award by the Lower East Side Festival. He was also awarded a Biffy by the Baltimore Film Festival and the first Big Apple Orange Award by Syracuse University and is also is on their Walk of Fame. In October 1999 Jerry was honored by The New York Friar's Club at their annual roast. The televised event, "The New York Friar's Club Roast of Jerry Stiller", received the highest ratings for any program in the history of the Comedy Central Network up to that time.

Jerry's autobiography, Married to Laughter was published by Simon and Schuster and the audio version of the book, read by Jerry, was released by Random House. The audio version received a 2000 Grammy Award nomination in the Spoken Word category. The paperback version of Married to Laughter was also released by Random House.

Currently Jerry can be seen alongside his wife, Anne in their internet series www.stillerandmeara.com, where they tackle a variety of hot topics.
