The Film Business Works for New York City

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment recently created a PSA campaign that highlights local businesses who benefit from Film and Television production. Over the following weeks, MOME will release the full series of six PSA's. The first two PSA's highlight Cafe Grumpy in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Bridge Cleaners in Downtown Brooklyn.

Shift NYC PSA

"Shift NYC PSA" highlights specific businesses or cultural institutions in each of New York City's five boroughs that have successfully changed course during the Covid-19 crisis in order to survive and support the surrounding communities. The selected organizations not only highlight the diverse communities of NYC's boroughs but also different categories ranging from film/tv, theatre, music, service industries and digital media.

Filming is Good for NYC

The "Filming is Good for NYC" campaign highlights the important economic role the production industry plays in New York City: the $400 million in tax revenue generated by the hundreds of films and television shows produced throughout the five boroughs translates to salaries for thousands of local firefighters, teachers and sanitation workers.

Join the Production Crew

In the "Join the Production Crew" campaign, New Yorkers are encouraged to learn more about the "Made in NY" Production Assistant Training Program, a free, full-time, five week-long training program for New Yorkers lacking opportunities in the industry. The "Join the Production Crew" campaign features several graduates of the "Made in NY" PA Training Program, who are now thriving in their careers in the local production industry.

Anti-Piracy

Piracy, or content theft, is the illegal consumption of movies, music, books and other creative materials. It happens every day, all over the world. It is a threat to the jobs of nearly 700,000 New Yorkers working in the creative industries, as well as a lot of lost revenue for the film, TV, music and fashion industries. In fact, more than 140,000 jobs have already been lost to content theft.
