NYC Honors Rita Moreno and Puerto Rican Heritage

Rita Moreno was honored as part of the City's Puerto Rican Heritage Reception

July 20, 2015 - At the 2015 Puerto Rican Heritage Reception, Commissioner López and other members of the administration were on hand as Mayor de Blasio honored Rita Moreno. The Academy Award-winning actress, whose credits include West Side Story, served as this year’s Grand Marshall of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

“There are stars, there are VIPs – and then there are icons,” said Mayor de Blasio, before presenting her with a proclamation and declaring June 11 in the City of New York as Rita Moreno Day.

On Sunday, June 19, the City of New York celebrated the 58th Puerto Rican Day Parade. Commissioner López joined the Mayor and other officials in the march down Fifth Ave to celebrate the history and culture and Puerto Rico.
