In honor of Ramadan, Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray invited NYC's Muslim community leaders together for an Iftar dinner. Imam Khalid Laftif, Executive Director and Chaplain (Imam) for the Islamic Center at New York University (NYU), initiated the call to prayer and Imam Ebad Rahman, a 2nd year PhD student at Columbia University, led the prayer at sundown. Prayer rugs were laid out on the lawn for guests as they overlooked the East River, before joining Mayor de Blasio and First Lady McCray at a seated dinner. Musical guest, Yacouba Sissoko, performed Malian djely music, a traditional storytelling art that has been passed on by family bloodlines in West Africa for centuries.
