"This community has done so much to define New York City for generations. This community is in the core, in the heart of who we are as New Yorkers. It's not a mistake that almost every New Yorker, one way or another, has learned a few yiddish phrases over the years. It's not a mistake that some of the foods we love the most come from this community. It's not a mistake that some of the people who have done the greatest leadership to move this city and this nation forward come from this community. If you love New York City, if you love all that we stand for, if you love how we have become great, then you have to love our Jewish community," said Mayor Bill de Blasio as he started off the beautiful evening.
The program also included remarks by Rabbi Michael Miller and honoree Joel Grey.
