NeON Sports offers free swimming, basketball, tennis, horseback riding, gymnastics and other sports programs to young New Yorkers, including those on probation. Offered in seven locations citywide, NeON Sports programs build confidence, enhance social skills and increase motivation to succeed in the classroom, while teaching the benefits of goal-setting and practice.

NeON Sports depends on a network of individuals and organizations working together to promote public safety and the success of people on probation by providing sports activities in their own neighborhoods.



Sports organizations wanted

We’re looking for local sports organizations to help us expand NeON Sports offerings throughout the five boroughs. If you’re interested, you can apply for a grant of up to $5,000 to fund NeON Sports programs. Grant recipients will be selected by DOP staff clients, community residents, business and cultural leaders, and local organizations.

NeON Sports℠ Summer 2019 Grant Applications

The New York City Department of Probation (DOP) is now accepting online applications for their Summer NeON Sports℠ Program. Grant applications for programs serving residents of Bedford Stuyvesant and Harlem up to $5,000 are due at midnight on Friday, April 12, 2019.

NeON Sports is a project of the New York City Department of Probation’s Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) that offers young people ages 14-24 in New York City, including those on probation, the chance to explore sports in a variety of disciplines, including swimming, basketball, tennis, horseback riding, gymnastics, aerobics and track and more. The program is free to participants and is designed to measurably improve their physical fitness, sports knowledge, self-esteem, social skills, confidence, learn the benefits of goal-setting and practice.

An advisory panel of NeON Stakeholders consisting of residents, DOP staff, business, and cultural leaders will review and conduct the final selection. Organizations interested in applying will have the opportunity to meet with stakeholders in advance of the application due date to pitch their program and ask questions to help shape their application:

  • Bedford Stuyvesant Pitch Presentation Date: March 28th, 11 am – 1 pm
    Location: 510 gates Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
  • Harlem Date: Pitch Presentation Date March 11th, 1-3 pm
    Location: 127 West 127th Street, New York, NY
