Policies

The NYPD is committed to engaging the public when creating new policing policies. Prior to the adoption of significant policy changes, the NYPD seeks feedback from the public. Below is the process the Department has implemented to ensure a deliberate and thoughtful process when drafting new policies.

Eligible Policies

Policy changes or new policies that meet the following criteria will be open for public comment:

  1. policy changes that are identified as having a significant impact on the public, OR
  2. review is mandated by law.

Process

  1. Policies that are subject to public comment will be posted on this page. Policies will be posted and open for comment for 30 days.
  2. Submitted comments will be reviewed and the policy will be revised if necessary.
  3. The final policy will be published with an explanation of any changes that were made in response to the comment process.

First Amendment Policy

This procedure memorializes the duties and responsibilities that have historically been carried out by the NYPD at First Amendment events. Additionally, it incorporates the measures the Department is taking to continue to improve our handling of these types of events.
