Legislative Affairs Unit

The Legislative Affairs Unit of the NYPD Legal Bureau is responsible for all aspects of the Department's participation in the legislative process at the federal, state, and local levels. Attorneys draft and review proposed legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns, confer with the mayor's legislative representatives in response to legislative initiatives and inquiries, and prepare members of the Department for hearings before legislative bodies.

The unit is responsible for informing Department members of all pertinent legislative developments, as well as developing strategies for their effective implementation. Legislative suggestions from members of the Department are solicited and utilized to draft bills and memoranda of support.

Additionally, in cooperation with the mayor's office, the Legislative Affairs Unit works on significant public safety lobbying efforts and works to coordinate sensitive communications between Department members and elected officials.
