The Office of the Inspector General for the New York City Police Department (OIG-NYPD) released a report today, asserting that the NYPD is misreporting police uses of force, but the OIG report itself is a classic case of misreporting. It emphasizes results gathered nearly a year and a half ago and downplays the much more positive results from 2017. NYPD knew all along that mounting an entirely new use-of-force reporting system in June 2016 would involve some early failures and inaccuracies. But NYPD audits in 2017 have shown consistently high compliance rates.
