DOB - Building One City

The Department of Buildings (DOB) is responsible for enforcing the New York City Construction Codes and Zoning Resolution for more than a million buildings and construction sites throughout the City. Issuing a record 140,000 construction permits in 2014, the daily operations of DOB impacts the everyday lives of those that live, work, and build in New York City.

In January 2015, Mayor de Blasio announced the beginnings of “fundamental reform” at DOB.  Operations, in conjunction with DOB, crafted a report calling for an unprecedented infusion of new resources, including 320 new positions and $120 million over four years, and significant reforms to internal processes and public interactions.  Through these initiatives, the City provides DOB with the tools it needs to be best-in-class in customer service, public safety, and efficient oversight.

The report, Building One City, outlines a number of steps the DOB can take to improve internal operations including:

  • Replacing the DOB mainframe database
  • Creating an Affordable Housing Hub
  • Redesigning the Borough Offices to improve customer experience
  • Reducing service level times to best-in-class
  • Facilitating seamless and automated agency handoffs
