The TLC made some changes to its license application process to make it easier and more efficient for applicants and the TLC. The new Rules include a one (1) year and three (3) year application ban depending on an applicant's TLC and DMV history. Read the New Fitness Rules (PDF) for additional information.

How many TLC Driver license types are there?

There are three (3) TLC driver licenses:

  • TLC Driver license (allows you to drive a Yellow Cab, Green Cab, and For-Hire Vehicle)
  • TLC Commuter Van Driver license
  • TLC Paratransit Driver license

Will I need to attend School if I am applying for a TLC Driver License (Yellow Cab, Green Cab, and For Hire Vehicle)?

Yes. You must attend school after filing an application with the TLC. Visit Driver Education for course information.

How can I check the status of my TLC Driver License Application?

You can check the status of your application in TLC UP.

How long will it take to receive my New TLC Driver License in the mail?

The applicant will either receive his/her license in the mail, or be contacted through text, email, a letter, or TLC UP with a request for additional information which is necessary to continue the application process.

Each application and its processing time will depend on the review of all provided documents, a review of the individual's fingerprint response report, any prior TLC license revocations, and/or outstanding requirements or clearances from the Department of Motor Vehicles, Parking Violations Bureau, and TLC. A fitness hearing may be required before a decision on your license application is made.

Applications are valid for ninety calendar days from the date it is submitted to TLC. If an applicant does not complete all the licensing requirements within the ninety calendar day period, the application will be denied. All application fees are non-refundable.

My TLC license was mailed but I have not received it. What do I do?

Your license will be mailed out and will take least 10 days period until you receive it. If you do not receive after this time period you can submit an Affirmation Form (PDF) to our Licensing Facility to receive a replacement TLC license.
