Melissa is currently serving as Executive Director of Community Health & Suicide Prevention at DVS. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the agency’s public health initiatives including the development and implementation of the VetsThriveNYC Whole Health Program, as well as coordinating with and educating community partners on suicide prevention best practices.
Prior to joining Team DVS, Walters served as Director of the Kings County Peer Counselor Program at NYC Health & Hospitals where she led and implemented a pilot program which expanded the scope of peer recovery in behavioral and mental health services. Walters began her 20-year career in human services as an inpatient psychiatric social worker at Woodhull Medical & Mental Health Center.
Walters holds an MSW in Clinical Practice and Administration from Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work. Having begun her academic career at Borough of Manhattan Community College before moving on to Hunter to complete her undergraduate degree, she endearingly refers to herself as “a true CUNY baby.”
