Caregivers
DVS recognizes the vital importance of military caregivers -- family members, spouses, and friends who manage and provide a broad range of care and assistance to current or former service members with disabling physical or mental injuries.
According to
the RAND Corporation study, military caregivers experience more health problems, face greater strains in family relationships, and have more workplace issues than non-caregivers. Changes are needed to both provide assistance to caregivers and to help them make plans for the future.
Hidden Heroes Initiative
DVS is proud to partner with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and the
Hidden Heroes Initiative. The mission of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation is to strengthen and empower American military caregivers and their families by raising public awareness, driving research, championing policy, and leading collaborations that make a significant impact on their lives.
The Foundation envisions an America where military caregivers are empowered, appreciated, and recognized for their service to our nation. To this end, the Hidden Heroes initiative is calling on every city in America to pledge its support to the military and veteran caregivers in their communities by ensuring that the 5.5 million military caregivers across the country have the support of their cities; they cannot support our veterans alone.
What We Do
There are more than 5.5 million military caregivers in the United States. Their voices are different, but they share a similar story of struggle and resilience. As a "Hidden Heroes City", New York City has opportunity to be a leader with our core veteran community partners to identify the military caregivers in our community to ensure that they have the support they need and deserve.
