Crime Victim Assistance

Safe Horizon provides information, counseling, and other assistance to crime victims. Their hotline has more than 150 languages available.

Safe Horizon also helps clients with receiving restitution from probationers and making claims for compensation with the New York State Crime Victims Board.

Safe Horizon's Project Safe provides lock replacement services to crime victims. Project Safe changes, replaces, or installs top locks free of charge within 24 to 48 hours. The bottom lock is the property and responsibility of the landlord and will not be serviced by Project Safe's locksmiths. You must get damaged doors and doorframes repaired before scheduling an appointment with a locksmith.

The Victim Information Notification Everyday (VINE) system allows crime victims to register to receive updates on the status of an inmate, including scheduled release date and transfer information.

Counseling and crime prevention education is also provided to seniors ages 60 and older by the City and a network of community-based agencies. Crime victims include victims of burglary, robbery, physical and sexual assaults, purse snatchings, pickpocketing, mortgage scams, mail and Internet scams, home improvement scams, and identity theft. The City can also assist seniors with making police reports or contacting the District Attorney's Office for an investigation.
