DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH 2ND ANNUAL WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

Two Officers to be Honored for Lifesaving Actions While Off-Duty

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) will celebrate the women of DOC with its 2nd annual Women’s Conference held at the New York City Police Academy at 130-30 28th Avenue in Queens at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

“Women make up almost half of the Department of Correction’s workforce, with 45 percent of women making up our uniformed ranks. Without question, the Boldest women in law enforcement and public safety work here,” said DOC Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. “I created this conference one year ago to celebrate and recognize the achievements of all women, past and present, who are trailblazers, role models, and barrier-breakers in this field.  I am so excited to once again celebrate the strength of our female staff as we cement this event as an important annual tradition for our department.”

The event will feature a keynote speech by John Jay College of Criminal Justice Constitutional Law Professor Gloria Browne-Marshall; workshops to foster knowledge sharing, skill development, collaboration, and innovation, and two table talk discussions – one featuring Commissioner Maginley-Liddie and Former Commissioner Jacqueline McMickens and another with the highest-ranking woman uniformed member of service Chief Sherrie Rembert, and newly promoted First Deputy Commissioner Francis Torres. In addition, the department will honor six uniformed members, including two Correction Officers receiving Heroism Awards for their lifesaving actions off-duty.

The theme of the conference is: "Stepping Boldly into the Future, By Leading the Way” with a goal of encouraging and inspiring the women of DOC and for all attendees to leave feeling renewed and energized to continue the important work of the Department of Correction.
