For the First Time in Five Years, the NYC Department of Correction

Welcomes Its New Class of Captains

East Elmhurst, NY (March 20, 2023) – Today, the Department of Correction (DOC) proudly promoted its newest class of Captains in the first promotion ceremony for this rank since 2018. This new class of 26 captains shows our commitment to investing in professional growth, improving safety, and helping improve the lives of uniformed staff who perform one of the city’s most challenging and rewarding jobs in law enforcement. This cohort of Captains are a diverse group of women and men from every borough with various backgrounds and experiences.

The role of a Captain is one of the most important and influential positions in DOC. The rank of captain supports overseeing day-to-day operations in DOC facilities and ensures proper supervision of correction officers. Captains not only possess technical knowledge about agency operations and policy, but they think critically and engage with facility leadership to ensure services are provided and the facilities are safe for all staff and people in custody. Captains also have a responsibility to uphold accountability and develop the next generation of Correction officers through mentoring.

“I am very proud of everyone being promoted today. This ceremony is not only a celebration, but also a symbol of the hard work, enthusiasm, and devotion these newly promoted Captains have for this agency,” said DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina. “The desire of these exceptional women and men to take on new challenges and responsibilities is truly commendable. Transitioning to a leadership role is never easy, and I offer every one of our Captains my support.”

“I am happy to announce that we are promoting our first group of first-line supervisors in fiveyears, and they have undergone a vigorous five-week training program at the DOC Academy to prepare them for their new role,” said Dr. Robert Gonzalez, Deputy Commissioner of Training and Development. “Our goal at the academy was to make them both mentally and physically prepared to supervise Correction Officers as they police the toughest streets in New York City- our jail system.”

“I am proud of each and every one of them,” said Patrick Ferraiuolo, President of the Correction Captains’ Association. “Although they are entering one of the toughest ranks in the agency, I am confident they will do the right thing and help our agency get back on its feet.”
