NEW YORK—Mayor de Blasio today announced that the PS 368 Hamilton Heights School will be renamed the William “Bill” Lynch School in honor of Bill Lynch Jr., a former New York City government official and political figure.

“Bill Lynch was a larger-than-life figure in New York City politics," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.  "Whether he was on the campaign trail, or at City Hall, he always fought for economic and social justice. Now, we will continue that legacy by inspiring generations of New Yorkers - including those right here at PS 368 - to make a difference in this city.”

"I admired Bill Lynch from the first moment I heard him speak while working in the Dinkins Administration," said First Lady Chirlane McCray. "It wasn't only his political genius — it was the way he brought people in, especially young people, and made us feel like we belonged. It is fitting that Bill and his achievements will inspire new generations of young people and encourage them into leadership and public service and continue the mission of making our City more fair and equitable."

A long-time resident of Hamilton Heights, Lynch served as campaign manager for David Dinkins’ 1989 mayoral race and later as Deputy Mayor for Intergovernmental Relations during the Dinkins administration. Lynch was an important advisor to the Mayor during a period of unrest in Brooklyn and fiscal crisis citywide. After serving in government, Lynch went on to work as a political advisor to various candidates and campaigns, including Bill Clinton and Charles Rangel, and Mario Cuomo. Lynch passed away in 2013 and is survived by his wife Mary, children Stacy and Bill III, and grandson Bill IV.

“What better way to honor Bill Lynch’s legacy of mentorship and fostering young people than in the heart of New York City schools,” said Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter. “He dedicated his life in service to our great City, and his commitment to civic responsibility and involvement continues to live on at P.S. 368 and in all our schools.”

“Boys & Girls Club of Harlem congratulates the entire PS 368 school community on its renaming as the William “Bill” Lynch school.  As a long-time partner of PS 368, we find this designation most  fitting. The leadership, faculty, staff, parents and most importantly the children represent the best of our neighborhood and our great city.  Together we will work together to steward Bill Lynch’s legacy and instill it in the hearts and minds of the students that pass through these doors,” said Dominique R. Jones, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Harlem.

"Bill Lynch was one of the most influential and effective political activists in the history of New York.  His legacy and proteges continue, full speed ahead,” said Lloyd Williams.
