Statement from Mayor Bill de Blasio on the Sanctuary Cities Bill

July 6, 2016

“On behalf of the people of New York City, I proudly stand in support of our U.S. Senators who voted against Senator Toomey’s dangerous legislation, which would punish cities that have common-sense policies that balance public safety and family unity. This is the third time we have seen this issue come to the floor in Washington and it is the third time we have seen it defeated. Washington already has enough on its plate without wasting time on a bill that is so clearly rooted in partisanship and so clearly puts our financial security in jeopardy by threatening to pull millions of dollars that cities depend on for core services. Instead, rather than legislate Donald Trump’s vision to divide our country, I encourage my colleagues to bring about real change through comprehensive immigration reform that will help us create a stronger, safer and more economically prosperous country.

“NYC is proud to be a welcoming city, with programs like IDNYC, the City’s municipal ID card program, and we will continue to work towards building a more inclusive city for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status.”
