What is Bronx Community Board 9’s Long-Term Planning Program?

Our Long-Term Planning Program is a series of community engagement events and planning research projects to assess resident needs, quality of life, and development opportunities in our District.

The Community Visioning Series is being undertaken to give residents an opportunity to share their needs and desires for the District. Planning research is being undertaken through surveying different parts of the District (the waterfront, open spaces, commercial areas, parks, specific neighborhoods) to identify ways to improve our communities, to come up with a vision for the future of our District.

The outcome will be a comprehensive Community Vision, which will be used to inform planning and development decisions made in our District.

What Will the Long-Term Planning Program Achieve?

The Board makes many decisions on behalf of our community. Every year we write a Statement of District Needs for the Bronx Borough President’s office, advise on development activity and budgetary decisions in the District, and advocate for local investments. The information and opinions we collect in the Program will be used to represent the community in these activities.

The Board is also working with the New York City Department of City Planning (NYC DCP) on starting Community-Based Planning activities in our District. These activities require community engagement, which we are fulfilling through the Community Visioning Series.

What is a Community-Based Plan?

NYC DCP can assist Community Boards in creating three types of Community-Based Plans:

  • 197-a Plans: A comprehensive community plan that provides recommendations for land use, zoning, capital investments, infrastructure, and visions for the future.

  • Local rezoning plans: Specific changes in land use and zoning (i.e. rules about what kinds of buildings and activities are allowed on individual properties), usually focused on a neighborhood or small area.

  • Community Action Strategies: A coordinated ‘task force’ of multiple city agencies to who will create reports and plans that focus on solving specific issues in the District, such as job creation or crime reduction.

What is Community Visioning?

Community Visioning’ is an activity where local residents and business owners come together to discuss the current state of their community, and their goals for it’s future. The purpose of this activity is to form a plan for the community based on these discussions.

Bronx Community Board 9 is holding a four-part Community Visioning Series throughout the District so we can speak to residents directly to find out:

  1. What do people want to preserve in their community?

  2. What do people want to create in their community?

  3. What do people want to change in their community?
