Fire Commissioner Promotes 30 Firefighters

January 5, 2017

On Thursday, January 5, 2016, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over a ceremony to promote 30 Firefighters to the rank of Lieutenant.

Commissioner Nigro emphasized the commitment of FDNY members consistently answering the call to emergencies.

“Outstanding work goes on every day in our city – it’s what is expected of our Firefighters,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Our Department is referred to as the best in the world, not only because of our storied history and the heroes who came before us, but also because of the men and women who serve today and continue to set the very high standard for all others to follow.”

FDNY Lieutenant Thomas C. Riches thanked the Department’s rigorous training and the significance of the promotion for his family.

“A lot of hard work gets put into being promoted, not only from everyone who took the test, but also from the members that trained us to get us here today,” said Lieutenant Riches. “For me personally and for my family, it’s a bittersweet day because my brother isn’t here to celebrate with us. When you look out into the crowd, you realize what’s missing.”

Lieutenant Riches is the brother of Firefighter James C. Riches, one of the 343 FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
Chief of Department James E. Leonard emphasized the caliber of individuals in this promotion class.

“Among this outstanding group there is a combined 350 years of experience,” said Chief Leonard. “That’s countless tours fighting fires, treating those who were injured, searching for people who were trapped and going above and beyond to help New Yorkers.”

Chief Leonard also acknowledged Lieutenant Michael Merced of Engine Company 16, a veteran of the Air National Guard who has served tours in Iraq and Kuwait, and recently returned from another deployment.

Lt. Merced spoke of the tremendous support he received from his firehouse. “They really went above and beyond, making sure that everything is covered and everything was taken care of for me and for my family,” said Lieutenant Merced. “It’s outstanding that the FDNY allows its members to take advantage of the extended military leave program, and I truly appreciate the support.”
The newly promoted Lieutenants will be stationed throughout the five boroughs.
