December 28, 2016

On the fifth night of Chanukah, Wednesday, December 28th, 2016, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro was joined by the Ner Tamid Society to a dedicate a menorah lighting in memory of three fallen FDNY members at FDNY Headquarters.

Commissioner Nigro highlighted the importance of public gatherings alongside colleagues, family, and friends during the holiday season, especially in remembrance of those FDNY members who gave up their lives.

“It’s important to be with your family at this time, and our FDNY family is no exception,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Fifteen years ago, our Department, and all the first responders who performed such extraordinary acts were a light that shone brightly to the world. They responded to the World Trade Center and bravely went towards the danger, giving their own lives so that others could live.”

Firefighter Stephen Belson of Battalion 7, Firefighter Alan Feinberg of Battalion 9, and Firefighter David Weiss of Rescue 1 are three of the 343 FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11th, 2001.

“My dad loved everything… he always found a reason to celebrate and to find light in the darkest places,” said Tara Edgette, daughter of Firefighter Alan Feinberg, Battalion 9.” “He loved being part of the FDNY Ner Tamid society.”

Tara thanked the continuous support and remembrance of her father from the Department.

“It is really special to be involved with anything the FDNY does,” said Tara Edgette, daughter of Firefighter Feinberg, Battalion 9. “You know there are people who will never forget the sad days and happy days."

FDNY Chaplain Rabbi Joseph Potasnik delivered the invocation and benediction for the menorah lighting ceremony. "Each candle on the menorah matters, may all of us from our different traditions bring light and love to one another as one family, said Rabbi Potasnik.”

Commissioner Nigro thanked the Ner Tamid Society for their efforts in partnering with the Department to bring this celebration to fruition.
