Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene - Eds and Meds Planning Framework

The Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene “Eds and Meds” Framework will support and guide the area’s economic recovery and continued growth as a vibrant 24/7 neighborhood. The Framework is an early step in planning Brooklyn’s Central Business District, which includes job centers in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, and Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the area’s exceptional transit connections to the rest of the borough, city, and region.

The “Eds and Meds” Framework will inform development plans in and around two important NYC educational and medical institutions: Long Island University and the Brooklyn Hospital Center.

The Department of City Planning (NYC Planning) presented the Framework to the City Planning Commission on May 8, 2023. Watch the presentation here.

The Framework outlines strategies to:

  • Encourage a thriving mix of educational and healthcare institutions, homes, offices, and stores
  • Improve the public realm and open space
  • Make it easier for residents and workers to get around

An important goal of the Framework is to ensure future development at the Brooklyn Hospital Center and Long Island University supports the local community with housing, job readiness, and more.

Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene are excellent locations to support the growth of jobs and housing. Almost as many New Yorkers live within an easy commute to Downtown Brooklyn as they do to Times Square. 13 subway lines and the regional Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) serve the neighborhood. The world-class Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront, the creative DUMBO loft district, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s high-tech manufacturing campus are all nearby.

To help the Brooklyn Hospital Center and Long Island University grow and foster the business district’s ongoing success, the City aims to further enhance the role this neighborhood plays for the entire region.

How Was This Framework Developed?

The Eds and Meds Framework is part of a work-in-progress vision for the area, which ongoing community input will continue to shape.

NYC Planning conducted in-depth research into population, workforce, and construction trends across the business district and surrounding neighborhoods. NYC Planning has presented to Community Board 2, elected officials, sister agencies and others to seek early feedback.
