Last week, during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence global campaign, First Lady of New York Chirlaine McCray and our City’s new Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services Dr. Raul Perea-Henze joined me and the ENDGBV team in honoring our 2019 Advocates of New York City. Thirty-six advocates, from 21 different city agencies and community organizations, were nominated by their peers for the honor this year—for their dedication and compassion, for their steadfast belief that together, we can end gender-based violence.
The Advocates of New York represent the best of our City’s advocacy community, which is diverse and dynamic, by providing case work, mental health and safety planning services, leading employment readiness programs, educating fellow New Yorkers about healthy relationships, and so much more. Many of this year’s advocates have backgrounds in social work, using their training to help survivors find the strength to move forward with their lives. Some focus their work on survivors who are immigrants, helping them to navigate various systems with cultural competency. Some advocates work at schools, in the courts, or in law enforcement, providing necessary connections when survivors need them most. All of these advocates work with unparalleled commitment on behalf of survivors every single day. Please join me in giving well-deserved kudos to our 2019 Advocates of New York.

ENDGBV MARKS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
New York City and ENDGBV, along with our sister agencies, marked 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence to raise awareness about the far reaching consequences of gender-based violence and to urge government, community, corporate, and philanthropic sectors to develop strategies that eliminate gender-based violence. From November 25 (International Day to End Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day), New Yorkers were encouraged to participate in the campaign by using the Action Kit developed by ENDGBV and the NYC Commission on Gender Equity (CGE), and attend events held around the city.
We started 16 Days through Facebook Live events with the Mexican Consulate General and the Peruvian Consulate General to answer questions about domestic violence and share resources in New York City. And throughout 16 Days, from Mariame Kabe’s “Understanding the Intersections of Criminalization and Survivorship” training to “Moving Together Against Violence” with Gibney Dance, to discussing workplace sexual harassment and New York State and City policies and resources with PowHer New York, Time’s Up, the NYC Human Rights Commission, and the Commission on Gender Equity—we observed 16 Days of Activism with performances, trainings, panels, and other events alongside our valued partners, and illuminated key city buildings in the global campaign to “Orange the World”.
We were especially honored to present the work of 16 New York City artists at our second annual “Responsive Communities” Art Exhibit at PS 109/El Barrio Artspace. This year’s artists included: Blu Rivera, Brianna Bonano, Brittany Maldonado, Brooke Rivera, Cat Del Buono, Claudia Marulanda, Dréa, Erica Puckett, Jpeg Zen, Lola LoveNotes, MJ-C Artistry, Nelson Santiago, Ro Pé, Rochelle White, Theresa Loong, and Yaquí Rodriguez. NYC FJC WINTER GEAR DRIVE & SECRET SNOWFLAKE SUCCESS
Cheers to staff at the New York City Mayor’s Office for their contributions to the winter gear drive online to benefit families who are survivors of gender-based violence. Winter clothing and accessories—such as coats, thermals, hats, gloves, scarves, and warm socks—purchased from the Amazon wish list will help clients visiting the NYC Family Justice Centers prepare for winter!
We thank mayoral staff and our corporate partners—including Brookfield, Swarovski, and BSE Global—for their generous contributions to Secret Snowflake, an annual holiday gift-giving initiative of the Mayor’s Office that mobilizes mayoral and private sector employees to answer hand-written letters for holiday gifts from children in need between ages 0-16 who receive social services from the city—including youth who are in the foster care system, shelter system, students in temporary housing and children being raised by kinship caregivers. Over the last 5 years, Secret Snowflake has helped to provide over 9,000 holiday gifts to over 5,000 children. On behalf of the children of survivors visiting the NYC FJCs this holiday season, thank you for your generosity!

The Suppliants Project tells the timeless story of fifty female refugees seeking asylum at a border from forced marriage and domestic violence. The play not only depicts the struggle of these women to cross into safety, but also the internal struggle within the city that ultimately receives them.

| Every month, ENDGBV’s NYC Family Justice Centers (FJCs) host Core trainings and workshops for service providers. We also occasionally provide advanced and special trainings. Sign up for our upcoming trainings
Our ENDGBV Training team also customizes trainings for service providers and their specific roles at City agencies and community-based organizations. Our Healthy Relationships Training Academy provides free interactive, intersectional, and discussion-based workshops on teen dating violence, healthy relationships, and consent to young people, ages 11 to 24.
