Landmark Preservation Commission
A landmark is a building, property, or object that has been designated so by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) due to its special character, special historical value, special aesthetic interest or value as part of the development, heritage, or cultural characteristics of New York City, New York State, or the nation. To maintain the aesthetic value and historical significance of a property, the LPC must approve any alteration, reconstruction, demolition, or new construction affecting a building designated as a landmark to ensure that any activity does not have any adverse effect on the significant features of a landmark or a historic district.
Landmarks may include almost any structure or object such as buildings, bridges, parks, water towers, a sidewalk clock, a fence, or even a tree. A property or object is eligible for landmark status when at least part of it is thirty years old or older.
