MTA New York City Transit and the New York City DOT look for opportunities to provide certain elements of Bus Rapid Transit (such as transit signal priority and high-visibility bus lanes) on other bus routes. These efforts will be focused both on busy bus corridors as well as areas of the city where numerous bus routes meet.

Bus Rapid Transit Phase I

In 2004, the NYC Department of Transportation, MTA New York City Transit, and the New York State Department of Transportation began studying how Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) could improve transit service in New York City. Through a process that involved detailed analysis and significant public outreach, the agencies developed a set of recommended routes that would be most appropriate for BRT improvements, known as Select Bus Service. These routes were included in PlaNYC 2030, Mayor Bloomberg's comprehensive sustainability plan for the City's future.

Bus Rapid Transit Phase II: Future Corridors

In 2009, the New York City Department of Transportation began the Bus Rapid Transit Phase II: Future Corridors study (released June 2010). The study looked at neighborhoods that are not served by the subway system, transit trips that are long and slow, subway corridors that experience heavy crowding, and areas that are expected to experience significant growth. The BRT Phase II report outlines 16 potential future Select Bus Service corridors in New York City.

Bus Forward

NYC DOT and the MTA are expanding the Select Bus Service program and creating a new program focused on improving local bus speed and reliability throughout the city. The Bus Forward report identifies 21 candidate corridors across the city for the next phase of SBS, and over 60 candidate corridors for local bus improvements.

Moving forward, DOT and NYCT will develop new BRT services based on available funding, community support, and progress on related transit projects. For each corridor, NYCT and DOT will engage in an extensive community planning effort.
