Man smiling in front of garden

I never paid much attention to my health growing up – until my father passed away from a stroke when I was in the 8th grade. I keenly became aware of the importance of health and knowing my family’s medical history. It was time to take control of my wellness for myself, my future family, and generations to come.

Throughout my wellness journey and education, I learned that compared to women, men are less likely to see a primary care doctor, and are more likely to get cancer, heart disease, become overweight, and are more prone to smoking, drinking, and abusing drugs. Since June is Men’s Health Month, I wanted to illuminate these disparities, but also shed light on how men are taking control of their health. I run a wellness program for male City employees and have been inspired by their commitment to improving their overall wellness. I asked several participants to share how they take their health to the next level. Here is what they had to say:

Get Up and Get Moving

“Since I started exercising, I noticed that my breathing, energy levels and mood have improved. To incorporate more exercise into my day, during my commute, I get off several stops early and walk the rest of the way. Since walking, I’ve started exploring other ways to exercise, including a rowing machine. Now the inches are coming off and I’m packing on confidence.”

Practice Stress Management

“Stress is an inevitable phenomenon. If stress is not properly managed it can negatively impact your life. Sometimes, you may need help from professionals to learn to manage stress. One thing I like to do to is take time to close my eyes and breathe. I also like to go outside for a walk and spend time in nature. These things help me refocus and center myself.”

Leverage Your Social Support

“Friends and family help me achieve my fitness goals through encouragement and advice. Many times, I can achieve more than I thought possible or achieve the intended results faster than expected. When my friends join me in exercising, the time passes quicker, and I enjoy the process more.”
