Do you know the facts about diabetes and prediabetes?

 

Did you know?
  • 1 in 10 adult New Yorkers has diabetes.
    Diabetes is a condition where your blood sugar is too high. Your body controls blood sugar with the help of a hormone called insulin. People with diabetes do not have enough insulin or can’t use insulin well.
  • 1 in 3 adults has prediabetes.
    Prediabetes means that your blood sugar (glucose) levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be called diabetes. People with prediabetes are at risk of developing diabetes in the future.
  • Nearly 90% of adults living with prediabetes don’t know they have it.
    Many people don’t know they have prediabetes or diabetes. Discuss your risk for diabetes with your health care provider.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program that helps people who are overweight and have prediabetes delay or avoid developing diabetes in the future.Icons of People in a Circle

  • Take this risk test to find out if you may have prediabetes and discuss your results with your health care provider.

The Diabetes Care PATH Program is available for individuals covered by EmblemHealth that have diabetes or gestational diabetes*. This program offers personalized tools, information and support to coordinate medical care and develop healthy lifestyle habits.

  • Other health insurance plans may offer similar programs. Call the number on your health insurance card to learn more.

 

The NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue has initiated the Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program, offering adults with chronic disease support in transitioning to a healthy lifestyle that includes a whole-foods and plant-based diet.

 

*Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when a pregnant woman has high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. It may go away after giving birth but increases the risk of diabetes later in life

Get regular physical activity, no matter what your weight is. Adults should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity, five days a week.

Shape Up NYC offers free fitness classes in all five boroughs. Registration is not required. Find a workout class near you at nyc.gov/shapeupnyc.
